How to make a favicon.ico
- Drop your logo (PNG with transparency or SVG works best) into the box above.
- ICO is already selected. Click Convert.
- Download favicon.ico, put it in your site's root folder and add <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico">.
What goes into a good favicon.ico
ICO is the Windows icon format, and the classic favicon.ico browsers look for. One file holds the same icon at several sizes.
A favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 px covers browser tabs and bookmarks; 64 to 256 px covers Windows shortcuts and high-density screens.
Start from a square logo or symbol on a transparent background; text in a favicon is unreadable at 16 px. Non-square images are centred and the rest is left transparent.
Frequently asked questions
Which sizes are inside the file?
16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px, each stored as a PNG, which every current browser and Windows since Vista reads.
Do I still need a PNG favicon?
Modern sites usually add a 180 px apple-touch-icon PNG for iPhones too. Use the image converter with PNG and a 180 px size for that.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device. The files are never sent to a server, so nobody else can see them, and they're gone when you close the tab.
