How to convert PDF to Word

  1. Drop your PDF into the box above.
  2. Click Convert to Word.
  3. Download the .docx and open it in Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.

How the conversion works

A PDF doesn't store paragraphs, only letters placed at coordinates. The converter reads every line's position, size and font, joins lines into paragraphs, recognises headings by their size, turns • and 1. lines into lists, keeps bold and italic, reads two-column pages left column first, and places each image where it was.

Simple documents such as letters, contracts, reports and CVs come out ready to edit. Complex layouts with tables, text boxes or magazine-style columns may need some tidying in Word.

Scanned PDFs are pictures of pages with no text in them. Those come out as page images; turning them into text needs OCR.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?

The content, order, headings, emphasis and images carry over, and the page size is kept. Exact positioning of every element isn't: the point is a document you can edit, not a picture of the PDF.

Can I convert a scanned PDF?

A scan has no text layer, so the Word file will contain the pages as images. Text recognition (OCR) is needed to make it editable.

Does it handle Cyrillic, accents and other alphabets?

Yes. The text is read as Unicode, so Serbian Cyrillic and Latin, accented letters and other scripts come across as they are.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device. The files are never sent to a server, so nobody else can see them, and they're gone when you close the tab.
